Going to School

Lisa Heydlauff, founder & director

Based in New Delhi, India, Going to School is a not-for-profit education trust built on the idea of designing stories with positive role models for Indian children. Books, movies, games and radio shows are part of a mix of innovative products that reach hundreds of thousands of children with the help of the local governments and school systems. Currently, GTS prints over 100,000 beautifully illustrated books every year and produces films like its Girl Stars series, which shares powerful stories of ordinary girls who have changed their lives by going to school.

“We’re working in 871 secondary schools reaching 87,000 children in Grade 9 in Bihar, India,” said Lisa. “And next, we are moving to a new state, Jharkhand with a specific focus on changing the lives of 40,601 girls in grade 8 and 9 in over 200 rural schools. Learning entrepreneurial skills at school helps girls get jobs or create jobs once they complete their education, as most girls drop out by grade 10. We’re honored and excited to work delivering skills that can enable girls to negotiate, communicate and lead their lives in new directions, and maybe even become entrepreneurs.”
